TRANSMISSION

The gearbox assembly is the core of the transmission system, responsible for transferring power from the engine to the wheels. It contains the gear sets that determine the torque and speed output. A well-maintained gearbox ensures smooth shifting and optimal vehicle performance.

The torque converter in automatic transmissions serves as a fluid coupling that transfers rotating power from the engine to the transmission. It multiplies torque when the vehicle is accelerating from a stop, providing smooth power delivery without a manual clutch.

The clutch assembly connects and disconnects the engine from the transmission in manual vehicles. It allows the driver to change gears smoothly by temporarily interrupting power flow. Key parts include the clutch disc, pressure plate, and release bearing.

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) is the electronic brain that manages gear shifts in modern automatic transmissions. It uses sensors to monitor vehicle speed, throttle position, and engine load to determine the optimal time to shift gears for efficiency and performance.

The valve body is the hydraulic control center of an automatic transmission. It directs transmission fluid to the appropriate clutch packs and bands to engage the correct gear. A faulty valve body can cause harsh shifting, slipping, or failure to change gears.

The differential is a gear train that allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds while cornering. It splits torque between the wheels and ensures stable handling. Common types include open, limited-slip, and locking differentials for various driving conditions.

The transfer case is found in four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles. It splits power between the front and rear axles and may include a low-range gear set for off-road traction. Proper maintenance is essential for reliable four-wheel-drive operation.

Solenoids and sensors throughout the transmission monitor and control hydraulic pressure, temperature, and shift timing. These electronic components communicate with the TCM to ensure precise gear engagement and protect the transmission from damage due to overheating or excessive pressure.
